This is a recap of the key tech highlights of 2023 segregated into General (Science et all) & Core IT (Trends et all)

General

Axiom-one

This year saw a potentially more significant milestone reached, as Axiom-1 became the first privately funded crewed mission to dock with the International Space Station (ISS). Using a craft designed by SpaceX, three astronauts successfully launched from Kennedy Space Center in April and spent 16 days docked with the ISS’s Harmony hub.

JWST (James Webb Space Telescope)

allows us to see farther (and farther back in time) than ever before. Its unmatched infrared capabilities have already given us unprecedented views of star formation. Scientists have seen into the early universe as it was a mere 100 million years after the Big Bang, which happened about 13.8 billion years ago. The telescope is also capturing the wonders of our own solar system, like this vision of Neptune’s faint dusty rings in wavelengths in the near-infrared range. And it could be our best bet for finding extraterrestrial life.

JWST captures a gas giant in the earliest stage of birth in the EAGLE NEBULA (new planet getting formed!!) https://www.news9live.com/science/james-webb-space-telescope-captures-pillars-of-creation-in-eagle-nebula-203219

Pig organs partially revived in dead animals

Researchers have restored circulation and cellular activity in the vital organs of pigs, such as the heart and brain, one hour after the animals died. The team hooked up the animals’ circulatory system to OrganEx, a system that pumps a mixture of blood and a “perfusate” of fluid-borne nutrients around the body. The research challenges the idea that cardiac death — which occurs when blood circulation and oxygenation stops — is irreversible, and raises ethical questions about the definition of death.

The technique could increase the number of organs available for transplant and buy doctors more time to save a life if applied to people.

Optical Chip Set a New Internet Speed Record

can send nearly twice the amount of traffic as the entire internet in a single second. Setting the speed record for data transmission at 1.84 petabits, this new technology is described internetsplits a laser into the full spectrum of light

That’s mind-boggling when compared to the 1- to 10-gigabit home connections we currently consider cutting edge, since 1 petabit is a million gigabits. It’s possible because the chip , producing “hundreds” of distinct frequencies, or colors.

Paxlovid — The Covid Pill

The pill developed by Pfizer as a “cure” at the start of the year has proven to be effective at reducing the chance of a person suffering from severe symptoms, even if given after infection. Initial findings suggest that they reduce the risk of hospitalization by 89%. The drug works by disrupting the virus’s ability to replicate itself within the body — essentially by forming a protective coating around the cells.

Evidence Showed That Two Asteroid Strikes — Not Just One — Killed the Dinosaurs

Scientists discovered a crater 250 miles off the coast of West Africa that indicates a previously unknown large asteroid strike. It appears to have hit Earth around the same time as the dinosaur-killing Chicxulub asteroid, making it a partner in this extinction crime. The crater is more than five miles in diameter and lies on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Orca

The World’s Biggest Carbon Removal Plant Opens

The Orca, close to Reykjavik, Iceland, is the largest and most powerful facility of its kind, with the capacity to capture 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year. The carbon dioxide is sucked through filters that bind it with water and pump it into the ground, where natural processes eventually transform it into carbon minerals – essentially rocks

A “hibernating” battery

Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory announced the creation of a low-cost molten salt battery that can store energy for months. ( today’s lithium-ion batteries lose energy while sitting idle, preventing us from storing energy in them for more than a few days or weeks.)

Notable Gadgets of 2022

Apple Iphone 14 (A16 Bionic chip), Nothing Phone 1 ,

Bose quiet comfort 2 earbuds(hidden microphones in the earbuds, they monitor external sound and emit an anti-sound wave to cancel out any noise other than whatever you’re listening to),

AI

AI dominates especially in the areas of Robotic Automatic, NLP, Comp Vision & Agents

The AI market will grow to a $190 billion industry by 2025 with global spending on cognitive and AI systems reaching over $57 billion in 2023.

Adaptive AI allows for model behavior change post-deployment by using real-time feedback, to continuously retrain models and learn within runtime and development environments, based on new data and adjusted goals, to adapt quickly to changing real-world circumstances.

Generative AI is the technology to create new content by utilizing existing text, audio files, or images. With generative AI, computers detect the underlying pattern related to the input and produce similar content.

Did you pay an app called Lensa to make you some Magic Avatars? Or spend a few minutes talking to ChatGPT? If so, well, you had a lot of company.

ChatGPT, ChatGPT & ChatGPT

ChatGPT, a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022, is the tech industry’s latest step in generative artificial intelligence. The AI bot has been trending on Twitter and amassed over a million users within five days of its launch.

ChatGPT is a substantial GPT-3(Generative Pretrained Transformer 3)-based language model. A vast amount of data was used to train it.Dall-E was created by the same company. It creates art from virtually any natural language description using artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The World’s Second Biggest Cryptocurrency Successfully Switches to Proof-Of-Stake

The “merge” of 2022 saw the popular Ethereum blockchain — which acts as a distributed computing platform as well as a cryptocurrency — successfully switch from a proof-of-work (PoW) model (similar to Bitcoin) to proof-of-stake (PoS).

According to the Ethereum Foundation, by doing so, it reduced the overall energy usage of the network by 99.9%. This is significant because the large amount of energy used by blockchain networks has often been seen as a hurdle that has to be cleared before the technology will live up to its potential.

Quantum Computing

The revenues for the global quantum computing market are projected to surpass $2.5 billion by 2029.

Quantum computing is another emerging technology that will catapult business operations and industry value chains to another level. According to McKinsey, Quantum computing has the potential to capture nearly $700 billion in value as early as 2035. Quantum computing could accelerate technologies, fast-track drug research, and crack encryption more effortlessly.

Quantum computing operates on the quantum state of subatomic particles, where each particle represents information as quantum bits (qubits). Qubits, through entanglements, can interact with other qubits. Furthermore, it can hold multiple values simultaneously (Superposition). Quantum computing is way faster than classical computation, only needing a fraction of the memory to perform tasks.

Digital Immune System:

The Digital Immune System combines various practices and technologies to make critical applications more resilient to bugs. Thereby making it easier for them to recover, sustain their services, manage risks, and maintain business continuity. According to Gartner, businesses that invest in digital immunity will increase customer satisfaction by decreasing downtime by 80%.

The fundamental concepts of digital immunity include Observability, AI-augmented testing, Chaos engineering, auto-remediation, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Software supply chain security. These combine to ensure systems don’t crash, provide uninterrupted services, and issues get corrected fast.

The immune system will be equipped to handle sudden critical failures and learn from them to prevent them later. According to Gartner, businesses that invest in digital immunity will increase customer satisfaction by decreasing downtime by 80%.

Applied Observability

works from the data emitted by an organization, using AI to analyze and make recommendations, which allow an enterprise to make faster and more accurate future decisions. When applied systematically, it can reduce the latency for response and optimize business operations in real time.

Superapps

are more than composite applications that aggregate services. A superapp combines the features of an app, a platform and an ecosystem in one application, providing a platform for third parties to develop and publish their own miniapps on.It is therefore a kind of all-in-one platform, where users have all the services they need in one place. This has important benefits since it eliminates the need to download other applications and learn how to use them.

Consider transactions: A superapp can connect to all systems and linked user accounts (sources such as savings accounts, credit cards, etc.), and carry out transactions at all systems (purchases such as mutual funds, stocks, groceries, insurance, etc.), all in one app

“By 2027, more than 50% of the global population will be daily active users of multiple superapps.”
